Volcanic eruptions in 1995

REGION 2: AFRICA & RED SEA

  • Erta-Ale: lava lake activity continued throughout 1995. Activity of this kind has been continuous since 1967 or earlier.
  • Oldoinyo Lengai: resumption of carbonatitic intracrateral effusive activity during the summer of 1995, with significant lava emission later in the year. The latest notable pre-1995 activity occurred in mid-1993 and was unusually explosive, following ten years of continuous, low-level effusive activity.
  • Nyiragongo: lava lake activity continued through 1995. Following episodic pulses of lava supply through February, the activity became more regular. The new lava lake began to form in June 1994, after 12 years of inactivity.
