Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 27 September
to 5 p.m. 28 September 1998

Activity at the volcano was at background levels again, with the tremor present for the past couple of days having diminished. A total of 15 rockfalls and 7 volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded by the seismic network in the past 24 hours.

Observations of the dome were made from the helicopter this afternoon. There are still some very steep areas around the flanks of the dome, especially in the back of the 3 July scar and above Gages valley. Steaming was noted from a number of vents around the dome, but at a reduced level from that seen over the past few days.

Measurements were made to the EDM reflector on the northern flank of the volcano from Windy Hill. The distance measured again showed some shortening, suggesting a reversal in the lengthening trend seen between March and early September following cessation of dome growth.

Residents of Montserrat should continue to check Radio ZJB in case of further sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
