Strawman Summary of Our Web Plans

The following is a strawman summary of our web plans, following upon the earlier outline, which is attached for your reference. I was given the assignment of doing this to send to you all for comments after our thursday meeting. So give it some thought and return with additions/changes etc.

Cheers, Bill Rose

A strawman start for our web efforts--please do a critique of this as your work for the lab.

Overall Scope Statement
We aim to share our work with each other and with those who are interested, taking advantage of the web for communication, collaboration, efficiency and productivity and our own future interests (recruiting new people, communication about funding). The areas we should highlight are the things we are working on actively and critical items related to this that we need to share with each other and with those who are interested. We should not duplicate existing efforts unless it is essential. The organization of our efforts should be around our research foci. These include:

  1. Volcanic Plumes and Clouds
  2. Intercultural Volcanic Hazards Communication
  3. Volcanoes of northern Central America
  4. Some general items about volcanoes that are not available elsewhere, that do critical educational duties

What else is out there that could overlap with our goals?
  1. Web sites that compile information about individual volcanoes
    few very comprehensive ones
    http://www.volcano.si.edu/gvp/
    http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/
many regional and volcano observatory sites
  2. Web sites that try to keep track of activity
    few very comprehensive ones
    http://www.volcano.si.edu/gvp/
    http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/
    some which have stigma
    http://www.goodnet.com/~ej76707/index.htm
  3. Web sites that try to educate about volcanoes in other ways
    many with very diverse emphases
    http://www.dartmouth.edu/~volcano/
    http://www.usgs.gov/education/learnweb/volcano/index.html
  4. Northern Central America Volcanoes
    very little at all
    http://www-rci.rutgers.edu/%7Ecarr/index.html
  5. Volcanic Plumes and Clouds
very little that is comprehensive, numerous relevant pieces that can be integrated
    http://disaster.ceos.org/newash.htm
    http://www.ceos.noaa.gov/vocanov3.html
  6. Intercultural Volcanic Hazards communications
    very little?

What are the things that can be done on the Web?
  • color, high resolution items
  • animations
  • 3D visualizations
  • graphical interfaces

Who are our audiences for these Web sites?

How to get started?

What do we do first? Make an outline?
