METEOR-3 TOMS OBSERVATIONS OF RABAUL ERUPTION PLUME

Meteor-3 TOMS overflew the eruption plume from Rabaul, New Britain
at 4:45am GMT on September 22, 1994. Preliminary results show SO2 column
amounts up to a maximum of ~60 matm-cm in the vicinity of the volcano.   
The estimated size of the SO2 plume is 25,000km^2. SO2 mass in the plume 
estimated at 30,000 tonnes +/- 50%.
