                        NICARAGUA - VOLCANIC ERUPTION
                      DHA-GENEVA SITUATION REPORT NO.3
                              18 DECEMBER 1995

  SITUATION

  1.      PROLONGED  VOLCANIC  ACTIVITY  CONTINUES TO BE MONITORED BY
  NICARAGUAN, SWISS AND USA EXPERTS.

  2.      EVALUATION  OF DAMAGE CARRIED OUT IN 15 MOST AFFECTED RURAL
  COMMUNITIES  CONSISTING  OF  994 FAMILIES (6,144 PERSONS). REGIONAL
  ECONOMIC  LOSSES  ESTIMATED  AT USDLRS 722,000 IN AGRICULTURE, ROAD
  NETWORK, HOUSING AND HEALTH.

  3.      NATIONAL,  REGIONAL  AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES COOPERATING WITH
  REDCROSS  AND  NGOS IN RELIEF OPERATIONS AND IN DIVERTING RESOURCES
  TO  MEET  EMERGENCY  NEEDS.  EFFORTS FOCUSSING  IN CLEARING TOWN OF
  LEON  (94,000 INHABITANTS) FROM ASH FALL IN ORDER TO PREVENT SPREAD
  OF RESPIRATORY DISEASES, NOTABLY AMONG CHILDREN.

  INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE

  4.      ITALIAN  GOVERNMENT  GAVE  CASH CONTRIBUTION THROUGH DHA OF
  USDLRS 100,000 FOR EMERGENCY RELIEF REQUIREMENTS.

  5.      WFP  PROVIDED 4,500 EMERGENCY FOOD RATIONS TO 223 EVACUATED
  FAMILIES  IN  TEMPORARY  SHELTERS.  THIS  HELP  WILL EXTEND FOR TWO
  WEEKS.  WFP  FOOD  FOR  WORK  PROJECTS ARE FORESEEN AFTER EMERGENCY
  PHASE FOR VICTIMS INVOLVED IN REHABILITATION WORK.

  6.     NIPPON FOUNDATION DONATED USDLRS 20,000 CASH THROUGH DHA FOR
  EMERGENCY NEEDS.

  7.      REDCROSS  PROVIDED  CLEARING  TOOLS.  MSF GRANTED EMERGENCY
  FOOD.

  8.      DHA  IS PREPARED TO SERVE AS CHANNEL FOR CASH CONTRIBUTIONS
  TO  BE  USED  DURING  IMMEDIATE  RELIEF  PHASE.  FUNDS ARE SPENT IN
  COORDINATION  WITH  RELEVANT  ORGANIZATIONS OF U.N. SYSTEM, AND DHA
  PROVIDES DONOR GOVERNMENTS WITH WRITTEN CONFIRMATION ON UTILIZATION
  OF  FUNDS  CONTRIBUTED.  FUNDS SHOULD BE TRANSFERRED TO DHA ACCOUNT
  NO.  CO-590.160.1  AT  SWISS  BANK  CORPORATION, CASE POSTALE 2770,
  CH-1211 GENEVA 2, WITH REFERENCE: NICARAGUA/VOLCANIC ERUPTION.

  9.      FOR  CO-ORDINATION PURPOSES, DONORS ARE REQUESTED TO INFORM
  DHA-GENEVA,    AS    INDICATED    BELOW,    OF   BILATERAL   RELIEF
  MISSIONS/PLEDGES/CONTRIBUTIONS  AND  THEIR  CORRESPONDING  VALUE BY
  ITEM.
