General Description of Facilities and HousingWater is supplied by local streams, is treated, and piped into homes. Trident Seafoods also operates its own water treatment facility. Sewage is piped to a community septic tank. Garbage is collected three times a week and burned in an incinerator. Ash is deposited in a temporary EPA-approved site, but the City does not have a permitted landfill. Funds have been provided to develop a landfill and purchase a larger incinerator. The City recycles aluminum. In Sept. 1993, Akutan completed a self-contained hydroturbine electric generator, backed by diesel in the same module. This hydroelectric generator is a model _ the first of its kind. The system is monitored 24 hours a day by a computer in Anchorage; the computer was funded by the Alaska Science and Technology Foundation.
