  • Instrumentation Network
  • Remote Sensing Studies
  • Emerging Technologies
3
Background (Frank Slide)
  • Canada’s deadliest landslide
  • April 29, 1903
  • 30 million m3
  • Over 70 people dead
  • 100 Seconds

Contributing Factors

  •  Structure of Turtle Mountain.
    • Anticline structure, joint pattern, thrusting, steep  bedding planes
  • Heavy precipitation year prior to slide.
  • Freeze/Thaw cycles.
  • Active coal mining at base of slide.
  • Karstification
  • Natural and Induced Microseismicity

Sensor Installation Project
  • Project funding of $1.1M announced April 29, 2003 at Frank Slide 100th Anniversary ceremony
  • Three phase monitoring system to be deployed by March 31, 2005
  • Collaborative effort between Government of Alberta, contractors,   Universities (Calgary and Alberta) and possibly stakeholders
  • Project won Alberta and Canadian Consulting Engineers Awards of Excellence

MICROSEISMIC SENSORS
  • Microseismic sensors record wave patterns caused by small movements within the mountain
  • Source location of events has not been successful due to the highly fractured nature of the bedrock
