S. Tubman, PCMI Hazards, Michigan Tech

Welcome to my page; this is currently a bit of a placeholder, but I plan to add content eventually. I'm a graduate student in the Peace Corps Masters International program at Michigan Tech in Houghton, MI. I'm currently completing my first semester of coursework (Spring 2009) here at Tech in fulfillment of requirements for Tech's PCMI program in geological hazards mitigation and engineering.

I graduated with a BA in Geology from Colgate University (Hamilton, NY) in May 2008 and spent the summer as an intern at Cascades Volcano Observatory (Vancouver, WA) deploying equipment around the slopes of Mt. St. Helens, Three Sisters, Mt. Rainier and Yellowstone caldera.

As a Peace Corps volunteer I hope to explore my interest in volcano monitoring, communication of geological hazards between scientists and the public, and human impacts of differing cultural perceptions of volcanic hazards. I also have a more general interest in place-based education, conscious consumerism, and sustainable development on a community level (both in the United States and abroad). My application is currently under medical review, and I intend to leave for PC staging between Jan. and March of 2010.

This was taken in January 2008 on the southern shore of Lake Superior, at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore outside of Munising, MI. If trees, snow, ice, and open water are your thing, the UP may be the best place on earth.
