Volcanic eruptions can set off any number of events that can be very deadly to nearby populations (lava flows, lahars, pyroclastic debris flows, etc.). Monitoring deformation of volcanoes with Global Positioning System (GPS) gives the opportunity to warn of impending eruptions, allowing the proper precautions/preparations/evacuations to be taken. |
