APPLICATIONS:

Landsat 7 Science Data Users Handbook:

This page lists and describes some of the applications of remote sensing (temperate forest monitoring, volcanology, land surface simulations, and coral reef mapping).

USGS Table of Remote Sensing Applications

The USGS has created a table of remote sensing applications related to the visible and IR bands captured by Landsat. These applications include agriculture, forestry and range resources; land use and mapping; geology; water resources; coastal resources; and environmental monitoring.

INSTRUMENTATION:

The Landsat satellite uses an Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) instrument that collects 8 spectral bands in blue, green, red, near infrared, infrared, shortwave infrared, thermal infrared, and panochromatic across a 183km wide swath. Bands 1-5 and 7 have a 30 m resolution, band 6 has a 60 m resolution, and band 8 has a 15 m resolution. The following sites have more information about the characteristics of the instruments:

ACQUIRE LANDSAT IMAGES:

Landsat data can be ordered from two different USGS sites:

The USGS Global Visualization Viewer

The USGS Earth Explorer

Some Landsat images (over 16,000) can also be acquired for free from the following site:
