Field Experience

Fieldwork in Lascar and Villarrica volcanoes

                    October-December 2002, Chile
With funding from MTU and the GAANN Fellowship (Department of Education), I  started my fieldwork on
Lascar and Villarrica volcanoes.  Sulfur dioxide gas emissions were measured on both volcanoes, using the Differ
ential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) system.  Particle flux and size on the volcanic plume were mea
sured using a Miccrotops II sun photometer.  Atmospheric conditions were measured using a hand-held weather
station.  At Villarrica Volcano, work also included the preparation of stations for the seismic network, and the
monitoring of thermal anomalies using an infrared radiometer with our colleagues from the University of Hawaii.

Volcanology Field Course in the Central Andes

                      November 2002, Argentina
With funding from the GAANN Fellowship, I participated on a field course in the Central Andes with students
from countries like Argentina, Chile, Peru, Mexico, United States, Italy, Germany, Brazil, and Cuba.  We observed
and studied the deposits formed by various volcanic processes, including caldera formation, phreatomagmatic
eruptions, hydrovolcanic events, lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mineralization in subvolcanic areas, and others.
