9.  (20 pts) Contrast the hazards and government’s mitigation efforts of the 1943 Paricutín and 1985 Nevado del Ruiz eruptions.   Explain how the eruption types as well as the governmental actions were important in the mitigation efforts. 

 

 


10.  (20 pts) Why is seismic monitoring currently the best way to monitor active volcanoes?  What are it’s advantages and disadvantages, compared to other methods such as gas, gravity, deformation measurements?  Use examples from the eruption case studies and monitoring methods we have covered in class.
