Registration for Teachers (GE5130)
An exciting aspect of this course is the unique learning environment that
is created by mixing professional teachers, undergraduates working towards
a teaching degree, geoscience majors and other non-majors. We had great
success last year with this diverse group. We look forward to the questions
and unique perspective on learning that you will bring to the course.
As a teacher, you will register for GE5130, Geology of Utah's National
Parks. The course is worth 4 semester credits. As part of the course, you
will collect rock samples from most of the formations we see (not, however,
from outcrops in the Parks themselves) to take back to your classrooms.
After you return from the field and have a chance to think about your experiences,
we ask you to use your samples, photos and/or other materials to
develop a unit plan. Your unit plan will be made available to others.
If you are interested in the course, please contact Dr.
Jackie Huntoon or Dr. Gregg Bluth.
Also, if you plan on registering, please inform either of the professors
of your intent to do so and please register early as we limit enrollment
to 20. We will make sure you get a copy of the teachers' registration form
if you contact us.
The course fee covers everything except your personal camping gear. The
registration form includes information about how to apply for a scholarship.
Up to 5 scholarships are available per year to assist professional teachers
who wish to take this course.
If you are a teacher but are not a resident of Michigan, you DO NOT have
to pay any additional out-of-state tuition fees to particpate in this course.
