Go to DAY 13
DESCRIPTION
Field Location: Canyonlands National Park and vicinity
Geologic Feature: Large-scale wavy bedding in the Dewey Bridge Member of the Entrada Sandstone.
Necessary Background Information: Entrada Sandstone stratigraphy, characteristics.
Geologic Problem: Why does the Dewey Bridge show such large-scale wavy bedding? Does it have any relationship to the arches in the overlying Slick Rock Member?
Rock Units Exposed Jurassic Entrada Sandstone.
Skills: Generation of multiple hypotheses. Testing of hypotheses. Bedform measurements.
Other Questions to Consider: (1) What can the periodicity of the waveforms tell you about the depositional environment? (2) Determine the composition of this sandstone, and relate it to the original rock from which it was derived.
Anticipated Outcomes: How to handle new field situations - making mental order out of (apparent) field chaos. Dealing with and taking advantage of diverse levels of understanding.
