GE5120 - Basin Analysis
Spring Semester, 2003
Instructor:
Dr. Jackie Huntoon, jeh@mtu.edu
Narrative:
This course reviews the basic mechanisms of basin formation in different
tectonic environments and the evolution of the basin fill. A required textbook
will be used as the basis for the course but outside readings from the
primary literature will be the focus of in-class discussions. This course
will be a seminar-type format; there will be few lectures. Class members
will be responsible for leading discussions on some of the subects listed
below.
Text:
Allen, P.A. and Allen, J.R., 1990, Basin Analysis Principles and Applications,
: Boston, Blackwell Scientific Publications, 451 p.
Meeting Times:
The course will meet two times per week for 1 1/2 hours.
Topics and Reading
Structure of the Earth - Chapter 1
Plate Tectonic Setting of Basins - Chapter 1
The Lithosphere - Chapter 2
Basins due to Lithospheric Stretching - Chapters 3, 7
Basins due to Flexure - Chapters 4, 7
Basins Associated with Strike-Slip Deformation - Chapters 5, 7
Controls on Basin Stratigraphy - Eustasy
Sequence Stratigraphy
Subsidence History - Chapter 8
Thermal History - Chapter 9
Grading Procedure:
The class grade will be primarily based on your performance in class,
i.e. how much did you contribute to the course? There will be bi-weekly
quizzes. You will be given homework assignments that will give you the
opportunity to practice using techniques.
