¤ Closing Words:

The material presented on this site represents a literature review, months of brainstorming, communications with Peace Corps Volunteers, feedback from experts, and guidance from several mentors.  At this time, The Guide has not been field tested - that is not to say that this work is invalid, but the methods presented here will likely face modification when put to use.  Hazard mitigation studies are gaining increased emphasis worldwide: new academic programs are appearing at universities (the Master's International is just one example), more international meetings are focusing on mitigation strategies (eg. the Canadian Geological Survey convened a meeting in May 2005 to focus on hazard mapping in South America4), annual geoscience meetings are including more sessions focused on geological hazard studies, and the United Nation's initiative to maintain International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction (the second Wednesday of October).  This field of study, an integration of social and scientific disciplines, is expanding quickly and as hazard awareness increases on a global scale, improvements in monitoring, forecasting, planning, and education will continue.

I welcome feedback regarding the community hazard mapping methods presented in this website.
