Morning Update
0700H 19 May, 1996

Volcanic activity at the Soufriere Hills volcano during the night continued at the same level as that observed during the day time. Seismicity continues to be dominated by small- to moderate-sized rockfall signals. A few hybrid events were recorded by the seismic station closest to the volcano (Chances Peak). Variable periods of low amplitude broadband tremor have been recorded on the Gages seismic station since 01:10 this morning.

Visibility during the early morning from the Observatory and Bramble Airport was poor and low cloud cover continue to obscure the top of the volcano.

The MVO still views the situation at the Soufriere Hills Volcano with grave concern and the scientists continue to urge that visits to the evacuated zone be kept to a minimum. The Tar River, Long Ground and Whites areas are extremely dangerous, and should not be entered under any circumstances.
