Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Morning Update
0700H 05 May, 1996

The level of activity at the Soufriere Hills volcano during the night has been slightly lower than during the previous 12 hours. Seismicity continues to be characterised by short duration episodes of low amplitude broadband tremor recorded at the seismic stations nearest to the volcano and several small rockfalls. A few small hybrid and long period earthquakes were also recorded during the period.

Visibility during the early morning from Bramble Airport and the Observatory has been poor.

The MVO still views the situation at the Soufriere Hills Volcano with grave concern and the scientists continue to urge that visits to the evacuated zone be kept to a minimum. The Tar River, Long Ground and Whites areas are extremely dangerous, and should not be entered under any circumstances.
