to 16:00 on 19 March 1996

The level of seismic activity has increased slightly over the last 24 hours. A variety of signals continue to be recorded by the seismic network, including about 20 significant long-period events and three volcano-tectonic earthquakes. The volcano-tectonic earthquakes were located beneath the crater, at a depth of less than 2 km, and beneath the Bethel and Lees areas at depths of less than 2 km and 3 km respectively.

The eastern and northern EDM triangles were measured today, between Long Ground, Whites, and Castle Peak and Amersham, Dagenham and Chances Steps. The results have not been fully processed yet, but no major changes in line length were measured.

High amounts of steam emission from the crater have continued, accompanied by occasional ash clouds. A helicopter observation flight was made this morning. The current dome growth is concentrated in the eastern part of the dome
