Daily Report
Report for the period 16:00 on 7 Jan. 1996
to 16:00 on 8 Jan. 1996

The repetitive pattern of hybrid earthquakes observed during the past two days continued throughout the period under review but event amplitudes were generally smaller and hence very few were locatable. The rate of occurrence was about 1 event per minute during the period from 16:00 on January 7 to 04:00 on January 08, then decreased to about one per two minutes until the end of the period under review. Several episodes of low amplitude , broadband tremor were also recorded by the Gages station only. We expect the present pattern of seismicity to continue for some time.

The EDM triangle White's - Long Ground - Castle Peak was measured but again showed no change within the errors of the technique.

Visual observations of the crater from the helicopter and the crater rim reveal that the whole dome area may have grown but the rate of change is still very low. A daring landing of the helicopter on Castle Peak dome by pilot Alex Grouchy enabled Dr. Simon Young to collect some new dome rocks which will be sent to various laboratories for analyses.
