Daily Report
Report for the period 16:00 on 6 Jan. 1996
to 16:00 on 7 Jan. 1996

Generally, seismic activity for this period has been similar to that of the previous 24 hours, i.e., dominated by the occurrence of near repetitive, hybrid type earthquakes which have been located beneath the Soufriere Hills volcano at relatively shallow depths. Between 16:00 and midnight on 06 January, few hybrid type earthquakes and short periods of low amplitude broadband tremor were recorded. From early on 07 January , seismic activity started to increase, with a rate of occurrence of earthquakes of about 1 per two minutes and this trend continued throughout the day until the end of the period under consideration. For a period of four (4) hours, between 06:23 and 10:25, there was almost continuous, slightly higher amplitude broadband tremor accompanying the hybrid event activity. The earthquakes recorded during this period were smaller than those of yesterday and were generally not locatable because they were detected by fewer stations. The processing of earthquakes from the previous 24 hours continues. We expect the present pattern of seismicity to continue for some time.

No EDM measurements or visual observations were possible today due to the rain and persistent low cloud. We hope for better conditions tomorrow. The long-awaited return soccer match between MVO and Police had to be postponed again due to the condition of the field; a new date is yet to be fixed.
