Daily Report
Report for the period 16:00 on 18 December
to 16:00 on 19 December 1995

Five (5) volcano-tectonic earthquakes have been located during this period. Three of these were located near Long Ground, one at South Soufriere Hills and one east of Garibaldi Hill. They were in the depth range 0 to 6.5 km. Eleven large long-period earthquakes were recorded. The small long-period earthquakes recorded at the Gages seismic station recently have continued, although they have not been as frequent as on previous days. Strong mudflow signals occurred until 18:40 last night and again from 06:30 to 07:20 this morning.

EDM measurements were made along the Amersham lines (including the Gages Wall reflector) this afternoon. The results are still being processed. The Castle Peak and the Chances Peak lines could not be measured because of the persistent low cloud in the east and parts of the west respectively. GPS measurements were made at St George's Hill, Reid's Hill and Harris' Lookout. The lines to Harris' Lookout lengthened by 4 cm between yesterday and today. This change is larger than any other previous change recorded by the GPS monitoring, and may be due to magma movement in the volcano.

Visual observations of the crater region were not possible today because of the low cloud.
