Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 15 January 1999
to 5 p.m. 16 January 1999

Activity at the Soufriere Hills volcano had generally been low over the past 24 hours. However, at 1429 there was a small explosive event that generated an ash cloud rising to at least 10,000ft. The explosion was followed by weak ash venting and associated volcanic tremor for around 15 minutes. Some fresh rockfall deposits were observed on the high up on the eastern slopes of the dome during a helicopter observation flight.

There were 18 rockfalls and 2 volcano-tectonic recorded on the seismic network during the last 24 hours.

There were occupations of GPS sites at Windy Hill and Galways.

Residents of Montserrat are advised to keep listening to ZJB Radio Montserrat for information relating to any further developments in the state of the volcano.
