Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 14 January 1999
to 5 p.m. 15 January 1999

Activity at the Soufriere Hills volcano was low overnight. At 08:27 this morning a small explosive event generated an ash cloud that rose to at least 15,000ft. The ash cloud moved to the north-west and light ash fall affected the Salem, Old Towne and Olveston area. Ash venting continued in a pulse-like manner for a short time after the initial event. Volcanic tremor was recorded for about 15 minutes. No pyroclastic flow deposits were observed in any of the valleys around the volcano although no clear observations of the upper Gages Valley were possible due to low cloud.

There were 8 rockfalls, 3 volcanotectonic earthquakes and 1 long period earthquake recorded on the seismic network during the last 24 hours.

Residents of Montserrat are advised to keep listening to ZJB Radio Montserrat for information relating to any further developments in the state of the volcano.
