Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 5 December
to 5 p.m. 6 December 1998

Activity at the volcano detected by the seismographs was reduced in the last 24 hours. The seismic networks recorded 27 rockfall signals and only 1 volcano-tectonic earthquake. The swarm of volcano-tectonic earthquakes which occurred in the previous 24 hours thus came to an end. Some short periods of volcanic tremor were also recorded on stations close to the crater today; these signals commonly coincide with steam and light ash venting.

The heavy overcast weather conditions, which have persisted all week, again prevented any sighting of the dome and crater area.

Residents of Montserrat are advised to keep listening to ZJB Radio Montserrat for information relating to any further developments in the state of the volcano.
