Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 27 October
to 5 p.m. 28 October 1998

The activity at the volcano has been at about the same level as yesterday. There were 25 rockfall signals and 9 volcano-tectonic events during the 24 hours since 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon.

During the early hours of yesterday evening, unusually clear views of the western flanks of the dome, over the Gages area, permitted observation of a glowing summit area in the section of the collapse of Tuesday 20th. October. This collapse of last week Tuesday which resulted in the generation of a small pyroclastic flow over Gages also exposed a deeper section of the still very hot dome lava which glows red to orange in the night.

Residents of Montserrat are advised to keep listening to ZJB Radio Montserrat for information relating to any further developments in the state of the volcano.
