Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 22 October
to 5 p.m. 23 October 1998

The volcano has been reasonably quiet during the period of this report. There were 21 rockfall signals, 10 volcano-tectonic and 2 long period events during the 24 hours since 4 p.m. yesterday afternoon.

A strong sulphurous odour could be smelled in the north of the island this afternoon. This is most likely due to an unusual northward wind direction today. A large rockfall at 16:38 produced a small ash cloud that is drifting slowly northwards at the time of writing.

Residents of Montserrat are advised to keep listening to ZJB Radio Montserrat for information relating to any further developments in the state of the volcano.
