Report for the period 5 p.m. 9 October
to 5 p.m. 10 October 1998

The Soufriere Hills volcano has remained quiet over the past twenty-four hours. A total of 14 rockfalls and 6 volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded beneath the volcano. There was one period of increased volcanic tremor between 0300 and 0500 this morning.

GPS measurements are being recorded overnight at stations in the north of the island as part of a continuing ground deformation program.

Numerous small earthquakes were generated by visitors to the MVO at Mongo Hill today during the seismology demonstration staged as part of the MVO's Open Day.

Dr Simon Young of the British Geological Survey left the island today after another tour of duty. He has been replaced as Chief Scientist by Mr Richard Robertson of the Seismic Research Unit.

Residents of Montserrat should continue to check Radio ZJB in case of sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
