Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 19 September
to 5 p.m. 20 September 1998

Preparations for the arrival of Hurricane Georges have been completed. Field stations have been withdrawn or secured and MVO is boarded up with all equipment and personnel under concrete roofs.

Seismometers were disconnected earlier today as signal noise due to the heavy seas prevented identification of volcano-related seismicity. Seismic monitoring will recommence as soon as is practical after the passage of the hurricane.

Visual observations were made of the dome this afternoon in clear weather. Steam venting was noted on both the southeastern and northern flanks of the dome, and some ash was being emitted from the northwestern flank of the dome in the area which sourced yesterday's flows.

MVO is working in close collaboration with the Emergency Department, and volcano-related communications over the next couple of days will be tied closely in with hurricane information. All the staff at MVO extend their best wishes to everyone on Montserrat during the testing time which lies ahead.
