Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 15 September
to 5 p.m. 16 September 1998

Activity on the volcano remains low. Over the past 24 hours 4 rockfall signals and 6 volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded by the seismic network. One small rockfall on the east side of the dome was observed during field operations.

COSPEC measurements taken today from the Police launch showed an output of about 700 tonnes of sulphur dioxide per day, an increase from the last few measurements but still lower than the levels recorded during most of last month.

A GPS occupation of sites at Blakes and Old Towne was started this afternoon. These stations act as a check on the stability of stations closer to the volcano.

Residents should continue checking Radio Montserrat in case there are sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
