Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 20 August
to 5 p.m. 21 August 1998

Activity on the volcano was low today. There were 5 rockfall signals, 4 volcano-tectonic earthquake, 1 hybrid earthquake and 2 long period earthquakes over the last 24 hours.

The vigorous ash and steam venting continues at a low level. The main fumarolic area in the base of the July 3 scar above the Tar River valley has been buried by a large rockfall that took place yesterday evening. The fumarole at the back of the scar on the side of Galways Mountain was not visible due to low cloud. The smell of sulphurous gas in northern Montserrat was due to the wind direction blowing to the north-east.

Dust levels were low at all stations.

Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
