Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 5 August
to 5 p.m. 7 August 1998

The level of activity at the volcano remained low today. There were 5 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 13 rockfalls.

Steam venting on the south west side of the dome was reported to be vigorous today with reports of jet engine sounds from one vent in particular. This enhanced steam venting is almost certainly due to the recent heavy rainfall.

A small mudflow signal was recorded last night at 1:40am. The mudflow travelled down the Belham valley but there are no major changes to the deposits around Belham bridge.

A regional earthquake was recorded on the seismic network last night just before 3am. It was a magnitude 3 event and occurred just north of Guadeloupe.

Due to a power cut there are no figures for today's dust levels.

Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
