Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 24 July
to 5 p.m. 25 July 1998

There was an increase in seismic activity at the volcano today. 44 volcano-tectonic events were recorded, most of these occurring during a period which extended from 9:30 last night to 3pm today. The events were located at depths ranging from 2-4 km. Apart from these earthquakes, 2 rockfalls were the only other seismic events recorded during the period.

Further COSPEC runs were completed today using the helicopter. The results of these measurements are not yet available.

Dust levels were low at all stations measured today. No figures are available for Salem and Old Towne due to a power cut.

Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
