Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 23 July
to 5 p.m. 24 July 1998

The volcano has remained quiet today. 14 rockfall signals, 16 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 1 hybrid earthquake were recorded by the seismic stations. At about 3 p.m. this afternoon, sudden heavy rain resulted in very small mudflow signals on some of the seismic stations.

Further COSPEC runs this morning gave an average sulphur dioxide flux of 900 tonnes per day. This is slightly lower than previous measurements throughout the month.

After the heavy rain this afternoon the top of the dome cleared briefly. From the MVO camera on Centre Hills it could be seen that the large spine that grew in March had definitely been removed by the July 3 collapse.

Dust levels were low at all stations today.

Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
