Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 15 July
to 5 p.m. 16 July 1998

Volcanic activity has remained at a low level during the past 24 hours. 9 rockfall signals and 2 volcano-tectonic were recorded by the seismic stations.

COSPEC measurements were again made today from the MV Shamrock II. The results of yesterday's measurements indicate a sulphur dioxide flux of 1100 tonnes per day.

A survey of the Tar River delta was completed today. The results are currently being computed.

Ash levels were raised today despite the rain. Ash masks should therefore be readily available and worn in particularly ashy conditions. The roads in Salem and Old Towne remain quite ashy especially when vehicles pass by.

Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are more sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
