Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 10 July
to 5 p.m. 11 July 1998

The volcano has again been quiet today with 6 rockfall signals, 9 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 2 hybrid earthquake being recorded.

The volcano was clear today with further observations of the dome indicating that no new material has grown in the scar created by last Friday's collapse. Vigorous ash venting was noted from a new fumarole located in the upper parts of the White River.

The results of COSPEC measurements completed yesterday indicated a reduction in the sulphur dioxide flux to 1465 tonnes per day. Further measurements were completed this afternoon; the results will be reported tomorrow.

Ash levels today were low at all sites however, dust masks should be worn while travelling on the roads.

Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are more sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
