Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 9 July
to 5 p.m. 10 July 1998

Today the volcano has been quiet. 10 rockfall signals, 7 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 1 hybrid earthquake were recorded.

The volcano was very clear today and the first good observations of the dome since July 3rd were made from the helicopter this afternoon. There is now a long, deep canyon cutting back into the dome from the eastern face. At the bottom of this canyon there is a line of fumeroles but no apparent new growth.

More COSPEC measurements were carried out this afternoon from the MV Shamrock II. The results of these measurements are not yet known and will be reported tomorrow.

Ash levels today were low at all sites today.

Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are more sudden developments in the state of the volcano.
