Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 5 p.m. 19 June
to 5 p.m. 20 June 1998

The volcano has remained quiet today. The level of earthquake activity remained very low with 2 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 1 rockfall being recorded on the seismic network.

Yesterday evening, temperatures of the deposits at Trant's were measured. At a depth of 2 m the temperature is still nearly 350 degrees centigrade. Investigation of the mudflows revealed that a 1.6 m deep channel has now formed in the pyroclastic flow deposits at Trant's and that this channel is directed towards the airport terminal.

Today further geological field work was carried out in the White River area.

Dust levels were low at sites in Mongo Hill and Old Towne today, but were raised at sites in Salem and Woodlands. This is most likely a result of the windy weather and the dry conditions.

Residents are reminded that the volcano remains in a potentially active state, and that they should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are sudden changes.
