Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 p.m. 20 May
to 6 p.m. 21 May 1998

The level of volcanic activity has been low today. Between 4 p.m. yesterday and 4 p.m. today, 16 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 1 rockfall were recorded by the seismograph networks.

There was a brief clear period today on the volcano and views from the closed-circuit TV camera showed that the spine is still in place on the top of the dome.

Dust levels were raised today at sites in Old Towne and Salem. Levels were low at Mango Drive in Woodlands and at the Mongo Hill site.

A pale blue haze was still present over Chances Peak and Gages Mountain today, which is an indication of sulphur dioxide being emitted from the volcano.

Residents are reminded that the volcano remains in a potentially active state, and that they should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case the present quiet situation at the volcano changes suddenly.
