Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6pm 4 May
to 6pm 5 May 1998

The level of volcanic activity over the past 24 hours has remained low.

Between 4pm yesterday and 4pm today there were 2 rockfall signals, 2 hybrid earthquakes and 10 volcano-tectonic earthquakes. Four of the volcano-tectonic earthquakes were located and the locations and sizes are in keeping with similar volcano tectonic events observed throughout April and a few days ealier. Smaller earthquakes cannot be located because signal amplitudes are too low to allow accurate picking of arrival times at a sufficient number of seismic stations across the network.

One regional earthquake was recorded on the local network and located about 60 km north-east of Montserrat.

Dust levels at all monitoring stations remained low today.

Residents are reminded that the volcano remains in an active state, and that they should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case the present quiet situation at the volcano changes suddenly.
