Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6pm 20 April
to 6pm 21 April 1998

The level of volcanic activity over the past 24 hours has remained low.

Between 4pm yesterday and 4pm today there were 13 volcano-tectonic earthquakes, 2 long period earthquakes and 3 rockfalls. Volcano-tectonic events once again dominated the seismic activity, the long period events were very small.

Excellent visibility this afternoon enabled a team to survey the south side of the dome using a theodolite. These high quality data will be added to the current dome volume estimate to further improve its accuracy.

Field teams observed only very small rockfalls from the dome today which formed simply as a result of degradation of the dome.

Work continued today on the installation of a new GPS site in the South Soufriere Hills.

Dust levels at all monitoring stations were low today.

Residents are reminded to keep listening to Radio Montserrat for any further information.
