Report for the period 6pm 13 April
to 6pm 14 April 1998


The level of volcanic activity over the past 24 hours has remained low.

Seismic activity was also low: between 4pm yesterday and 4pm today there were 5 volcano-tectonic earthquakes, 6 rockfalls and one hybrid event.

Visibility was good during most of the morning, but deteriorated dramatically in the afternoon. There are no marked changes on the dome surface. A fresh pyroclastic flow deposit is present in the upper reaches of the Tar River Valley along the northern wall of the valley.

Work continued on the seismometer installation at South Soufriere Hills today.

Dust levels at all monitoring stations remained low.

Report for the period 5 p.m. 22 July to 5 p.m. 23 July 1998 The volcano has remained quiet today. 13 rockfall signals, 10 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 1 hybrid earthquake were recorded by the seismic stations. Yesterday two sets of COSPEC data were collected, one by boat and another by helicopter. The two types of data were in close agreement with each other and a mean measurement from 4 boat runs and 2 helicopter runs was 1300 tonnes per day of sulphur dioxide. Dust levels were low at all stations today. Residents should continue listening to Radio Montserrat in case there are sudden developments in the state of the volcano. 17:00 23 July 1998
