Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 2 April
to 6 pm 3 April 1998

The level of volcanic activity over the past 24 hours has remained relatively low.

Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 9 rockfalls, 4 hybrid earthquakes and 6 volcano-tectonic earthquakes. The volcano-tectonic earthquakes are thought to have been shallow events in the dome.

Three large rockfalls were observed today in the Tar River valley, they all generated small ash clouds.

The kinematic GPS survey of the talus deposits in the upper White river valley has now been processed. This detailed survey has enabled the MVO to better constrain the current volume of the dome and the revised total dome volume is now 120 million cubic metres. It has been calculated that since 17th January 1998 the deposits in the upper Galways region have increased in volume by 6 million cubic metres.

Work was carried out today on the repeater site in the Centre Hills and at the GPS site at Whites. Preparations are also being made for the installation of some new seismic stations.

Dust levels at all monitoring stations were low today.

Residents are reminded to keep listening to Radio Montserrat for any further information.
