Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 22 March
to 6 pm 23 March 1998

The level of volcanic activity remained low throughout the reporting period with only a few small rockfall and earthquake signals recorded. There were 8 rockfalls 3 hybrid earthquakes and 4 volcano-tectonic events.

The summit of the volcano was observed during a brief period of clearing of the dense cloud cover which persisted for most of the day. There were no detectable signs of any physical change on the dome when compared to its size and shape as viewed two weeks ago. The prominent tooth-like spine which was reported at that time is still in place at the centre of the summit of the dome.

Dust levels were low at all sites today.

Residents are reminded to keep listening to Radio Montserrat for any further information.
