Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 18 March
to 6 pm 19 March 1998

The level of volcanic activity over the last twenty four hours has remained relatively low.

Between 16.00 yesterday and 16.00 today there were 3 hybrid earthquakes, 9 rockfall signals and 4 volcano-tectonic earthquakes. These events were all relatively small and scattered throughout the day.

Visibility was poor for most of the day with the dome area obscured by the low cloud base.

Observations from the eastern flanks of the volcano revealed recent rockfall activity in a chute below the area of fumarolic activity. Rockfalls were also observed on the southern side from the Galways area. Samples were also collected from the boxing day deposits.

Dust levels were low at all sites today.

Residents are reminded to remain alert and listen to ZJB radio.
