Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 14 March
to 6 pm 15 March 1998

The level of volcanic activity over the last twenty four hours has remained low.

Between 16.00 yesterday and 16.00 today there was 1 hybrid earthquakes, 2 rockfall signals and 2 volcano-tectonic earthquakes. These events were all small and were scattered throughout the reporting period.

Visibility was good today with all but the top 50m of the dome being clear. No marked changes over the visible parts of the dome have occurred.

Temperature measurements were made in the pyroclastic flow deposits produced in the September 21st 1997 collapse. Maximum temperatures of 590 degrees Centigrade were encountered at a depth of 1.5 metres. The deposits are still dangerous due to their high temperature and can still cause severe burns. The deposits are loosely packed and are easily mobilised by rainfall to produce hot mudflows.

Dust levels were slightly raised at all sites today.

Residents are reminded to remain alert and listen to ZJB radio.
