Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 7 March
to 6 pm 8 March 1998

The level of volcanic activity over the last twenty four hours has been low.

Between 16.00 yesterday and 16.00 today there were 12 rockfall signals and 03 volcano-tectonic earthquakes. The earthquakes have occurred throughout the reporting period. The largest of the rockfalls generated a small ash cloud which was noticed from the eastern sector but the fall itself appeared to have occurred on the southern sector.

Visibility at the summit was restricted as a result of the persistent cloud cover but observations made just after midday confirmed that at least two very prominent summit spines exist at the top of the dome.

Dust levels were at an elevated level in some parts of Woodlands today, largely due to very windy conditions which have prevailed on the island over the last 24 hours. The levels in St. Peters and St. John were low. Residents are reminded to remain alert and listen to ZJB radio.
