Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 22 February
to 6 pm 23 February 1998

Seismic activity and dust levels at all monitoring sites were low today.

Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 28 hybrid, 10 long-period, 18 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 16 distinct rockfall signals. There was one regional event recorded on the network. There were two periods of enhanced earthquake activity which consisted of a mixture of hybrid and volcano-tectonic earthquakes. One period started at 04:23 and ended at 08:17 this morning with 20 events and the other between 09:50 and 11:37 with 15 events. There was a peak in rockfall activity between 10pm and midnight last night and between 12 and 2.30pm this afternoon. There still appears to be a pattern of peaks in activity occurring every 10 to 12 hours.

A pyroclastic flow temperature sensor was today installed in the Tar River area today which hopefully will give information on temperatures of these events in the future.

No clear views were obtained of the summit of the volcano today but there were views of the eastern flank which continues to produce high amounts of steam and volcanic gases.

Residents are reminded to remain alert and listen to ZJB radio.
