Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 18 February
to 6 pm 19 February 1998

Activity at the volcano has continued to follow a 10 to 12 hour cyclic pattern with elevated periods characterised by an increase in rockfall activity and continuous low amplitude volcanic tremor.

Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 9 hybrid earthquakes, 6 volcano-tectonic earthquake and 42 distinct rockfall signals. Peaks in seismic activity occurred between 9pm - 11pm last night and 7am - 2pm this morning. The first period of activity resulted in very light ashfall in Salem and Old Towne at 10:30pm last night.

Dust levels at all of the monitoring sites remained low today.

Work was completed today on establishment of continuous GPS and microgravity stations at Hermitage and MVO in Mongo Hill. These stations are part of a collaborative effort between the MVO and the University of Puerto Rico.

Ms Chloe Harford left Montserrat today after spending about 5 weeks at the MVO.
