Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Daily Report
Report for the period 6 pm 13 February
to 6 pm 14 February 1998

Activity at the volcano was about the same as yesterday with dust levels generally low and rockfall events dominant.

Between 16:00 yesterday and 16:00 today there were 5 hybrid earthquakes, 2 long period earthquakes, 1 volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 87 distinct rockfall signals. There were three periods of elevated seismic activity during which most of the rockfalls occurred. These were experienced between 7 pm and 9 pm last night; between 3 am and 5 am and between 11 am to 1 pm today.

The periods of heightened activity correlated with the most vigorous ash venting and steam plumes. Some light ash fall was observed at Olveston.

There was a collaborative GPS survey today between MVO and the University of Puerto Rico. Stations were occupied at Harris, Old Town, St. George's hill and Lee's Yard. The results of these measurements are currently being processed.

Dust levels at all of the monitoring sites remained low today.
